As the weather gets colder and the nights start earlier each day, I thought it would be the perfect time to share some of my favorite food movies and shows that are available for streaming on Netflix. You can skip the megaplex and enjoy these seven recommendations right at home. Grab a blanket and snuggle in—and don’t forget some snacks, you won’t want to watch these on an empty stomach.
This is actually a six-part series featuring a different chef in each episode, telling the story behind their food philosophy and how they run a restaurant. The cinematography is beautiful and the stories vary widely; my favorite is Episode 3 with Francis Mallmann and his open-fire cooking style.
This movie, starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp, will make you want to open your own chocolate shop in a small French town. It’s a chick flick that will have you falling in love with chocolate all over again.
Funny enough, I also dream of sushi. You don’t have to be a fan of the cuisine though to enjoy this great documentary, profiling chef Jiro Ono. His dedication and passion has made him into one of the world’s greatest sushi chefs. His tiny 10-seat restaurant is located in a Tokyo subway station.
This is another documentary about dedicated chefs. This film follows the world of high-end French pastry, the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition that happens once every four years. It’s serious, it’s funny, and grown men cry over cake. Definitely a good time.
This funny, light French film is based on a true story, following one chef’s appointment to work for the President of France.
Even watching this trailer will make you hungry. The food in this film looks amazing—you will definitely want to try one of the signature Cuban sandwiches. It’s a great story about family, food, and going after your own dreams.
If you’ve ever wanted to know more about what it takes to be a master sommelier, this documentary is for you. As the trailer says, it’s “the hardest test that you’ve never heard of.” The story follows four men who are seeking the title. It’s a fascinating look at such a specific niche.
I also greatly enjoyed Julie and Julia and The Hundred-Foot Journey, but both of these movies are only available on Netflix DVD.
